Making The Right Choice of Online Coaching Programs

Having a coach is a great way to stay motivated to develop a solid training plan and to get the most out of your workouts.  The majority of athletes have full time jobs, families, and other commitments.  When it comes to training, it is not about how much you put in, but rather what is right for you and YOUR lifestyle.   Please realize that each coach has his/her own style, own philosophy and motivational techniques.  As an athlete it is important to not only connect with your coach on an emotional level but also to trust in the program he/she has developed for you.

There are coaching programs that may fit you better than others.  A program should be tailored for you.  Realize that not all training days will feel great, but a good coach should provide you motivation when you need a boost.  Your training plan should help you meet your goals, as long as you follow the plan and not change it without notifying your coach.  You and your coach should have a working relationship.  Below, I have identified some important factors in selecting a coach:

-Determine what you are looking for in a coach.
Some athletes need a lot of positive reinforcement while others  need very little.  It is a good idea to write down all the things you want in a coach, so that you can determine your exact needs.

-What are the coaches credentials?
Just because a coach is or was a good athlete, it does not make him or her a good coach.  Coaching is about teaching, about customer service, and about identifying what the athlete really needs.  Prior experience working with athletes is a must, followed then by their certifications and credentials.

-Interview a few different coaches.  Which one do you connect with the best?
As long as you are paying for this service, get what you want and need. There are plenty of coaches out there.

-How available are they?  Will they be able to answer your questions or concerns promptly?
When you want a question answered you do not want a long wait to have it answered.

-
What if you need to change your plan because something comes up like a family commitment, sickness, etc?
I really stress that it is necessary to have a plan but that plans always need to remain flexible!  Things in life are consistently changing and so does you training schedule.  It is also important to have the coach available (as noted above) to change your plan if necessary.

-How much do their services and what will you get from them?
I really think you get what you pay for in this category.  I will tell you first-hand that there is a lot more to coaching than just making up weekly schedules.  It takes time to develop an annual training plan.  There should be time invested if the program is REALLY developed and designed for you.

There are many "multi-sport" coaches available to you.  Please consider the above when selecting a coach.  Do your research and ask questions.  Please know that when a coach is selected, it is imperative to trust in him/her and believe in your program.  If you are always adding or changing things around without his or her knowledge, your goals may not be attained and injuries could happen.  Your coach should have your best interest in mind and be fully invested in your success!

Yours in training,
Heather Haviland
