A weekend in Newport Beach, California
My plan to kick off the season was at the Huntington Beach half marathon which was today Sunday February 7th. Friday I ended up with flu like symptoms. I decided on still going, as who knows it could have just been a 24 hour thing. Unfortunately did not end up that way, spent the majority of time in bed on Saturday, periodically taking the all so famous pepto and trying to stay hydrated which does not work so well with the flu. Sunday came and I was finally feeling better, now better here is I finally did not have a nauseous feeling, I could at least eat half a bagel with cream cheese. So, I decided to at least start and see what happens.
I started holding my predicted pace of 6:30's, after the 5th mile my quads were getting very tight and it only got worse. Knowing what my body just went through the last 2 days, I decided it was the best thing to stop and walk back to the start. It really is the last miles of a half that can tear your legs up, add being dehydrated and that could set me back further. As I walked back, I cheered on the other runners and was anxiously waiting to hear how one of my athletes, Matthew performed for his debut in his first ever open half marathon.
Matthew had a great day holding 6:30's for 13.1 miles. As I knew this was what Matthew was very capable of, Matthew was extremely happy and surprised he was able to do this. To add to his fitness was just one week ago holding 286 for a 45:00 indoor Time Trial at the 2010 RACC Multisport and Running Expo. Then having his newly formed TEAM, the IsCorp Triathlon Team sweaping the overall win at the expo. Matthew is on to a great start for his 2010 racing season....
Continue to watch for my update postings, there is some exciting things to come!!
